Tuesday's Tales-Beautiful Blondie

Great News! Blondie has now been adopted. Some lucky person now has a beautiful girl!

Today, I have a young lady from one of our rural animal controls in Missouri. I love Blondie's coloring. She was found as a stray and is probably about a year old. I think she has the sweetest face and immediately knew she was going to be my star for the day. As all dogs, she deserves a loving home. If you want to adopt Blondie or know someone who wants a sweet girl that gets along with all other animal, please check out her Petfinder page HERE.

Making The Scene At Bow Wow Ween

The Pup Society Report

Your ace Poodle reporters were on the job this weekend!

Our devilish good looking hosts, Christine and Myko

This weekend, we were the pup society reporters. We made the scene at Queen Of Paws Boutique's
Bow Wow Ween

Of course, at The Queen Of Paws, it is never about just having fun (although there was much fun to be had!). This was also a charity event for Bark N Blues, an organization that helps homeless pets.

We were first met by the ferocious dragon, Lulu. Lulu's mom Angie is the Queen Of Paws groomer. Bet you couldn't tell, huh?

Sophia and Niko observing and taking important mental notes of the party.

Crystal Wiebe and Scooby had their Beer Paws table set up. I had to have two Beer Paws, one in Poodle pink and one in Mizzou Black and Gold.  And the bottle sweaters were just too cute-being a knitter, one of those came home with me too!

When a soirée is in Kansas, Dorothy must be in attendance.

Niko and a friendly lion getting to know each other

There were some pretty big Bumble Bees flying around!

These two little Poms had the wow factor down

Things got occasionally a little "Batty"!

And you didn't even need a costume to join in the fun!

And there is definitely a sauvé man-about-town. Scooby is modeling his new Debonair from the Sophia and Niko line.

That sums up this social event. I know two pooped Poodles who slept all the way home!

Why I Go To My Veterinarian

I feel it is very important for my fur kids well being to have a veterinarian that I can trust and talk to. Sophia even has two; one for her wellness and one who is certified in veterinary chiropractics.

I found an info-graphic that explains what most of us take for granted: our family veterinarian's knowledge, experience and the value of a complete preventative care examination.

I ask my veterinarians a wealth of questions and get the answers I need. Personally I feel that nothing can replace a good veterinarian and it is worth the time and research to find one.

Tuesday's Tails-Ozzie the Blue Heeler

Ozzie, The Blue Heeler From Missouri Needs A Home

Look at the beautiful markings on this Blue Heeler. Ozzie is from one of our rural pounds in Missouri and has been there since March.

At this point in time the pound is overflowing and soon some awful decisions will have to be made if some homes cannot be found.

Ozzie is about seven months old and was surrendered by his owner.

If you know anyone who like Ozzie, please contact Stover Animal Control through Ozzie's Petfinder page HERE.

I hope this beautiful young dog can find his home.

A Pumpkin For Penny

Last Monday I posted about carving a pumpkin in the image of your pup. Before that post, I decided to make a pumpkin that looked like our Penny (a pitt-mix). When I reviewed the Better Homes and Garden's site, I found that they didn't have a design for the American Pitt Bull. So, I decided to design my own pumpkin and share the design pattern (below) with everyone. So here goes........

Step 1

Go get your pumpkin. Print out the drawing plan that is towards the end of this post and take it with you so you can get a pumpkin the correct side.

Step 2

Check you kitchen and tool chest and find tools that you think will work. I use everything from x-acto, grapefruit, and paring knifes. Other tools that I use are clay tools and anything sharp that will make the perforations on the pumpkin surface. I have seen the pumpkin carving kits at different stores. For the most part, they are plastic and look to be totally useless to me.

Step 3

Cut out the design and tape it on the pumpkin. There are a few tools in this shot that I found were not useful.

Step 4

With something sharp, punch through the printed lines. This makes perforations on the pumpkin.

Step 5

When you have enough perforations that allow the design to be clear on the pumpkin, it is time to carve. Pay careful attention to the diagram and only cut all the way through on the solid outlines.

Cut about half way through one the dashed lines. Really, how far you go is up to you.

Here is the pattern. It is a jpeg and you should be able to save and print it.

And here is our Penny looking all beautiful in her Halloween collar that I made for her.

Happy Pumpkin Carving!

Sharing "When Cats Steal The Dogs' Beds"

I am sure we are not the only household who has both cats and dogs. This video touched close to home and is too funny not to share. I am sure that dog only houses will laugh at this one also!

It is found on PawBonito and I thought perfect for a weekend laugh! Enjoy.

Halloween Cat Chip Dip

A Tasty Treat For Your Human Family

Next to my cat are "Vampire Bites" They are simply apple slices, with peanut butter between and almonds for fangs. I brushed them with lemon juice to keep them from turning. A creative healthy treat!

Today, I have a different cat to feature.

The cat I am talking about is one that our family looks forward to because it is yummy. And I like that it is easy to make.

The dip is  based on sour cream, so I can't say that it is all that healthy. But this year, I made small changes to the recipe to make it a little healthier.

The only problem is that no one will dig in until I take the first bite. They don't want to mess up this cat. But within a little while, only the whiskers were left!

Our party has come and gone this year. Next year, I am going to try an experiment. I am going to use 1/2 Greek yogurt and 1/2 sour cream and want to see if anyone notices.

Halloween Cat Dip

16 ounces sour cream
1 package taco seasoning
1 cup of chopped mixed spinach and lettuce
1 cup chopped tomatoes
1 cup of Mexican style shredded cheese (I use a mixture of Monterey Jack, cheddar, Queso Quesadilla, & Asadero)

For the cat features:

green pepper
black olives
tomato slice
chives (I actually used new garlic stems from our garden)

Mix sour cream and seasoning until well blended. Spread on bottom of a 9" quiche dish or plate. *

Layer the remaining ingredients. Make cutouts from the green pepper for ears, back of eyes (which I didn't do this time) and nose. Add olives, tomatoes and chives.

I am sure this is a pretty basic dip recipe. But, this presentation is all out fun.

* I used a larger platter so I could put the chips around the cat. It was easier serving that way.

Tuesday's Tails-Baby Penny

Great News-I just learned that Penny was adopted yesterday-10/20/2013!

Baby Penny-An Eight Week Old Boxer Mix

For today's puppy, I turned to one of our rural animal controls. This is Penny from the Stover Missouri Animal Control. She was recently given away free a some type of swap meet. We know what horrors can await dogs and cats that are given away to free homes in situations like this. She is very lucky to have found her way to Stover.

Penny, a Boxer mix is about 8 weeks old and will probably grow up to be at about 35-40 pounds.

Being just a baby, she loves being held and lavished with attention.

To find out more about Penny, please go to her page on Petfinder. Here's hoping that someone falls in love with this little girl and gives her a loving home.

Getting Into The Halloween Spirit-Carving A Pumpkin

Getting Into The October Spirit

Carve A Pumpkin To Look Like Your Pup

A couple of years ago I found a Better Homes And Garden Internet site that had 24 different pattern stencils for carving pumpkins to look like certain dog breeds. Not all breeds are represented. Fortunately, a Poodle was one of those that were. There are also carving suggestions, which are very helpful.

The breeds represented are:

  1. Dachshund
  2. Bulldog
  3. Border Collie
  4. Boston Terrier
  5. Chihuahua
  6. Beagle
  7. Boxer
  8. Cavalier King Charles Spaniel
  9. German Shepard
  10. Golden Retriever
  11. Cocker Spaniel
  12. Pomeranian
  13. Jack Russel
  14. German Shorthair Pointer
  15. Doberman Pincher
  16. Labrador Retriever
  17. Pug
  18. Rottweiler
  19. Poodle
  20. Schnauzer
  21. Scottish Terrier
  22. Shih Tzu
  23. Siberian Husky
  24. Yorkshire Terrier
For this year, I was planning to do a pumpkin that looked like our Penny, who is a Pitt mix (this is the link). I had a disappointment when I found that there was not a stencil for her.

I have decided to change that. I have made a stencil for the American Pitt Bull. I am going to get my pumpkin today, carve it, and then blog the pumpkin along with the FREE stencil for anyone who wants to use it. Stay tuned! And Happy Pumpkin Carving!

Little Nahla Needs A Home

Nahla is a little Corgi/Dachshund mix.  She is right at a year old and around 10-12 pounds. Nahla's family had to give her up because they had to many dogs. They were very unset, but she just had to find a new home.

The family also had five children, so Nahla should be great around kids. In fact, she also gets along with all dogs and cats.

Nahla is housebroken and walks on a leash. Sounds like a smart and an already trained dog to me.

If you are interested in or know someone who is looking for the perfect sized companion, please check out Nahla's Petfinder Page

And look at that tail, it's a happy tail!

Make A Travel Size No-Sew Pet Blanket

Last month I featured a DIY Dog Bed using a simple no sew technique. And I had leftovers from that project (two pieces of fabric about 24"x30")

It seemed to me, the perfect size for a travel blanket. I can either use it the Poodles' car-seat or on the seat itself for Dylan.

It has taken me a bit longer that I planned to to get this blanket finished. I took on one to many projects this past month. Does anyone else pull that one?

The Blanket

This blanket is the original no-sew fleece blanket like the ones I made my grandsons.

Supplies:

  1. Two different polar fleece fabrics cut to the size of desired blanket. I was using left overs so I didn't worry about this step.
  2. Index cards to cut guides
  3. Scissors to cut fabric
That's about it. This project doesn't take much.

Step1:

Place the two pieces of fabric on top of each other with the wrong sides facing each other.

Step 2:

Cut 4" x 4.5"rectangles out of each corner. Make sure that the 4" side is parallel with the cross grain and that the 4.5" side is parallel with the grain.

I've added a short demo on the difference of grains on polar fleece. This will explain the need to cut two different lengths of fringe.

I cut rectangles rather than squares for this particle blanket because the cross grain on polar fleece is really stretchy. This blanket is put together with the tying technique. And tying will make the cross-grain ties longer. I add and extra 1/2" to the ties running with the grain. The ties look even this way.

Step 3:

Cut 1" fringe. I highly recommend making a guide (I fold an index card) 1" x 4.5" with a 4" guide line.

Step 4:

Tying the fringe. The advantages of using the tying method are:

  1. Super secure-these aren't coming out!
  2. It is more colorful than the "loop in the slit". The opposite side shows up much more in this method.

Again, I am using a video to demonstrate this step. This link will take you to my You-Tube channel. Blogger didn't want to upload this one.

I want to reiterate, a few points from the video. Always tug at each knot as you finish. This really sets the knot.

Tying can bunch up the fabric, so it is important to give a small tug between ties. Don't tug to forcefully or you will hear an unwanted ripping sound. I am tell you this from experience!

Well, that about ties this post up. Hope you have fun with this. Maybe, Barney the cat won't take this one over at our house (only because it is going to be in the car)!
